Standard rule:   words ending with O => I (usually masculine)

                        Words ending with A => E (usually feminine)

                        Words ending with E => I (either masculine or feminine)

IL: used in front of masculine nouns beginning with CONSONANT(S).

IL RAGAZZO, IL PROFESSORE, IL TRENO, IL CREDITO, IL BROGLIO

LO: used in front of masculine nouns that begin with a

·  Z

·  S+consonant

(Also in front of words beginning with  PS – PN – GN)

· LO ZUCCHERO, LO ZERO, LO STADIO, LO SGHERRO, LO SBIRRO, LO SPAZIO,
(LO PSICOLOGO, LO PNEUMATICO, LO GNOMO)

In front of words that begin with a vowel, > LO < drops the  > O <  and becomes  > L' <

· L’ AMICO – L’UOMO – L’ITALIANO – L’OROLOGIO – L’ESPERTO

(originally the article is LO but in front of the vowel we have the usual contraction)

LA :     in front of feminine words beginning with CONSONANT

LA MAMMA, LA FAMIGLIA, LA CLASSE, LA LEZIONE, LA STRADA, LA ZEBRA
LA CLASSE, LA STAZIONE, LA ZUCCHERIERA, LA PSICOLOGA.

In front of words that begin with a vowel, >LA< drops the  >  A<  and becomes  > L' <
