What is the difference between

THE TRAIN and A TRAIN.

THE is used when the people communicating already know which train they are talking about

A is using referring to a generic train.

TRY with THE BOOK and A BOOK.

Write two sentence, one with THE and the other with A.

It will be clear that when you use THE, the people communicating already know WHICH book they are referring to.

When they use A, at least one of the people communicating does not know WHICH book.

EX:  "I read it in the book." Both know WHICH book

"I read it in a book."    The speaker may or may not know (remember) which book. The listener does not know.
