 DISPENSA VERBI -ERE

Phonetics of -ERE verbs

LEGG-ERE, DIPING-ERE, CONVINCERE PIACERE.

These verbs are not IRREGULAR per se. However, they follow a pattern that is different from -ARE verbs.

With -ARE, we saw that when the ROOT of a verb ends with the letter <C> or <G> this sounds must remain constant. Thus, PAGARE will always have the 'hard sound' G (GAs). When the root is followed by <i> or <e>, in order to maintain the 'hard sound' <G>, we must insert the letter <h>.

Io paGo, to paGHi.  Without the <H>, the pronunciation of <G> would be like a <J>.

GOOD NEWS: with -ERE verbs this kind of spelling adjustment is not necessary. The sound of either <C> and <G> changes depending on the vowel that follows.

io legg     o                (hard sound G)
tu legg     i                   ('soft sound' J)
lui / lei legg     e                  (soft)
noi legg     iamo            (soft)
voi legg     ete               (soft)
loro legg     ono              (soft)

IRREGOLARI

BERE:    root  BEV-

infinitive ending - ERE

In LATIN the verb was BEVERE.
Over time the middle syllable disappeared
BE(VE)RE and the infinitive became BERE.

However, the conjugation retains the middle syllable. Thus, the only IRREGULAR form is the INFINITIVE, while the rest of the verb is absolutely regular. Just pretend that the real infinitive is BEVERE and you will have no problems.

io bev     o
tu bev     i
lui / lei bev     e
noi bev     iamo
voi bev     ete
loro bev     ono

CONOSCERE   root: CONOSC-

For the same reason described above, a verb like CONOSCERE (pronunciation of the cluster is <sh>) in front of different vowels, the sound will change.

io conosc  o  (SC = 'hard sound' <scared>)
tu conosc  i   (soft = sh)
lui / lei conosc  e   (soft)
noi conosc  iamo   (soft)
voi conosc  ete   (soft)
loro conosc  ono   (hard)

SAPERE
io so
tu sai
lui / lei sa
noi sappiamo
