AMARCORD
(dialect for "Mi ricordo", I remember)

Quando ero (I was) bambino abitavo (I used to live) a Menaggio,

uno splendido paese sul lago di Como...

Vivevo ( I lived - I used to live ) con la mia famiglia in una villetta con il giardino.

I miei nonni abitavano ( They lived - used to live ) in una vecchia casa di fronte alla nostra.

Il mio migliore amico si chiamava ( His name was ) Gerardo.

Gerardo aveva ( He had ) una bellissima bicicletta rossa.

Eravamo ( We were ) sempre insieme.

Dopo la scuola finivamo ( We would finish ) in fretta i compiti poi correvamo ( We would run ) sulla riva del lago a giocare ai pirati.

Quando faceva ( It was ) caldo, andavamo ( We used to go  - nwe would go ) a nuotare.

Adesso non e' piu' possibile nuotare nel lago perche' ci sono troppe barche e allora in paese hanno costruito una piscina nuova.

These forms are in the IMPERFETTO tense

 

 

Can you figure out the conjugation pattern?

1) start with the PRESENT TENSE of any -ARE VERBS

2) insert the syllable  -AV- between the stem and the endings

3) For - ERE verbs insert the syllable  -EV

4) For - IRE verbs insert the syllable  -IV

5) For - ERE and - IRE use the same endings as for - ARE

IMPERFETTO

The IMPERFETTO is a tense of the past that has no direct equivalent in English.

The traditional explanations in grammar books is that the imperfetto is the "tense of narration in the past."

This doesn't really explain much. Since there is no conceptual parallel in English,  it is more efficient just to show when it should be used, without trying to formulate an all encompassing linguistic and cognitive theory. (We do have one, though, but it would serve no purpose to publish it here.)

Our basic recommandation is still valid:

DO NOT BE OBSESSED WITH ACCURACY.

DON'T LET THE DESIRE TO BE GRAMMATICALLY CORRECT INHIBIT YOUR EXPRESSION.
Nobody will fail to understand you just because you used the Passato Prossimo in place of the Imperfetto or viceversa.

 IMPERFETTO is the preferred* tense:


1) to express a habitual action in the past, i.e. something akin to:
"Everyday I used to ...I would go to school..."

2) with verbs that express a state rather than an action,
i.e.verbs such as ESSERE, STARE, ESISTERE and AVERE which do not define a specific event.

"aveva una bicicletta rossa," "eravamo amici," "stavo bene"

* "PREFERRED" because these are not hard and fast rules

 

 

IMPERFETTO

.
1) Imperfetto is used with verbs that describe a state - not an action:

IO ERO  = I was  is a state
IO AVEVO = I had : state

 

2) An activity that happened frequently or regularly in the past, similar to the English expression:

"I USED TO" or "I WOULD..."

Ex: I would go to school on foot; I used to go to school on foot.
3) It describes an ONGOING activity during which a completed action took place.

EX:  WHILE I was sleeping, my brother called me.

Mentre dormivo, mio fratello mi ha telefonato.

Dormivo indicates an ongoing activity, a sort of background, during which a specific action took place (ha telefonato). The action that began, took place and finished takes the PASSATO PROSSIMO.
