LECTURE: The most influential film with a political message in America

(If you are interested in the history of the nation, and why we are still smelling all around us the stench of racism, finding out more about this film and its consequences could be a starting point.)

  SCREEN   L'EMIGRANTE    (film)

(I just found out that the file on YOUTUBE has been blocked in the United States. I am looking for an alternative but it may not be ready until tomorrow.)

I hope this link works : LINK

I want to remind you that all the films are available at the language lab.

Answer briefly:   did you see the anti-capitalist and anti-American message in the film? Did you notice the roles of African Americans (very small) in this movie? How are white Americans represented? Isn't this a critical view of American society?

task 2     L'EMIGRANTE

The file on YOUTUBE has been blocked in the United States.

TRY THIS LINK (I am in a location with very small bandwidth and it looks like it is going to take a long time -- at least for me.)

Answer briefly:

Did you see the anti-capitalist and anti-American message in the film?
What is your instinctive, visceral reaction to Pamela? What does she represent?
Peppino goes from looking for his father to looking to get rich: in what moment this switch takes place? Is this "the seduction of Peppino" by America?
Have you notices the roles (rather small) reserved for African Americans? Isn't that a direct criticism of America?

task 3

THE WAY THEY LIVED

 1)    TAKE    NOTES

2) Describe CLEARLY THE  IMAGE you would choose for the cover of SON OF ITALY.

Exercise artistic / communication / critical judgment:  EXPLAIN WHY you think this image would TELL the buying public what the book is about.

3) FIND a major theme in these images and write your reactions to that theme:
EX: children, women, workers, or MAKE UP YOUR OWN CATEGORY: ex: PAIN, DESPAIR, HOPE, ACCEPTANCE, RESILIENCE etc.

task 4

1) Listen to the songs carefully. Analyze it as if they were poems, line by line, meaning by meaning,

2) WRITE: what feeling (longer lasting emotion) were you left with after listening several times?  Were the song successful in depicting the soul of NEAPOLITAN IMMIGRANTS?

3)  CHOOSE and explain:  Which song is closer to your sensibility, artistically and emotionally?

TASK 5 OPTIONAL    Was the message of "The Birth of a Country" a surprise to you?
