WHY

The stem of "mangiare" is "mangi-", the suffix of tu is "-i".

If you expected "mangi-i", "mangi-iamo" you were right.

However, in these circumstances the language gets rid of the redundand vowels.

The same applies to studiare, for instance.

Preferire
(To prefer)

Preferire belongs to the 3rd conjugation (-ire verbs), although with a somewhat different conjugation. Listen carefully to the sound files as the pronunciation of the suffix -isc changes.

Io preferisco
Tu preferisci
Lui preferisce
Lei preferisce

Noi preferiamo
Voi preferite
Loro preferiscono

Preferire and other similar vebs add the suffix "-isc-"before the verb endings of "io" "tu" "lui/lei" and "loro."
Other verbs following this pattern are: Uscire (to go out, exit), Finire (to finish)

Sentire follows a pattern without the "-isc-" suffix

Io sento, tu senti, lui sente etc.

Espressioni idiomatiche:

sapere + verbo = to know how to ....
io so fare da mangiare, so scrivere, so leggere, so dipingere.....

No, non lo so = No, I don't know
