Cancellous bone has two synonyms; Trabecular & Spongy. Cancellous bone is found in the Epiphyses of long bones. Cancellous (Trabecular, Spongy) bone is made of struts and plates of Lamellar bone approximately 200 um in diameter. Cancellous bone has a large surface area. Cancellous bone is also found in flat, short and irregular bones such as the vertebra. The Cancellous bone is covered by a layer of Cortical bone Cancellous bone is much more porous than Cortical bone. It is less stiff but much more ductile.
