Barbara Bowen is the author of Gender in the Theater of War: Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida (1993), of a forthcoming collection, Caliban's Tempest: Revisions of Shakespeare from Africa, the Americas, and Asia, and of articles on early modern and African-American literature. Her essay, "Aemilia Lanyer and the Invention of White Womanhood" will appear in Women's Alliances in Early Modern England, edited by Susan Frye and Karen Robertson (Oxford UP). She is a member of the English, Women's Studies and Cultural Studies faculties. She is active in the national struggle to protect academic freedom and public higher education.
