Rebecca Bushnell is Professor of English at the University
of Pennsylvania. She has written many essays on early modern
politics and social control in Renaissance drama, and she is the
author of Tragedies of Tyrants: Political Thought and Theater
in the English Renaissance (1990). Her most recent book is
A Culture of Teaching: Early Modern Humanism in Theory and
Practice(1996). She is currently engaged in a work-in-
progress on sixteenth and seventeenth-century gardening
literature.
