A Statue of Christopher Columbus, Chicago, Illinois. November, 1987.

I have chosen this photo from many I have taken in and around what Gerald D. Suttles called "The Addams Area" of Chicago, Illinois (1968). The Italian enclaves in this segmentally multi-ethnic neighborhood had diminished substantially since he had completed his study in the mid-1960s. The further shrinkage of the Italian neighborhood has more to do with up-scaling than with urban blight. In this part of the old neighborhood a space had been cleared for building new housing for "outsiders", and a park centering around an ethnically correct statute of Columbus.
