ANTI ITALIANISM
I would say the most surprising thing of all about anti-Italianism was the fact that the lynching in New Orleans were the largest mass lynching in the history of the USA. We read about this before and we learned about it but I never knew it was the largest in the history of the US. Besides that, nothing really surprised me, I knew most of these stereotypes about Italian Americans.
I think what is most unexpected is that after slavery was abolished, poor Italian immigrants work on plantations. Although I am not surprised that they were used as hard laborers, both in the north and in the south, I am surprised that Italians were put to work so quickly on plantations because of their darker complexion. This made me wonder how similarly black Americans and Italians were treated.
I was shocked about the Italian American and Canadian interment during
World War .//
It was surprising to learn that Italians were the second ethnic group that were most likely to be lynched because Americans did not see them as white or Anglo people.
The fear of Italians reproducing too much played a small role in Margaret Sanger's drive toward encouraging birth control
The one stereotype that I did not know about was, “Italian males are sometimes stereotyped as ‘Italian Stallions’ or ‘Latin lovers,’ while females have been stereotyped as either overly matriarchal or voluptuous, flirtatious, and exotic” (“Anti-Italianism” 1). |
