SCREENING
Open Lecture Feb 27 (from the homepage).
Screen the 3 Lumière
Brothers shorts. Screen The Birth of a Nation. Do a quick google search about this film, and how influential it was in shaping public opinion and giving impetus to the Jim Crow era (and if you don't know what Jim Crow was, that is a gap you want to fill as soon as possible.) |
POST MORTEM Feb 27 I got carried
away with the history of monotheism and anti-Semitism. In reality I was
planning on discussing more in depth the history of Africans descendents
in America, beginning with the first shipment of slaves in 1619, ONE
YEAR EARLIER than the arrival of the Mayflower in Plymouth. If these events are unknown to you, I URGE YOU to become acquainted with them. The NYTimes, in particular is running a long series of articles in a special section named "The 1619 Project" (click HERE). Here is a podcast with an interview with Jazmine Hughes about the origins of the slave trade (and the blessing it received from the Catholic Church) https://www.wnyc.org/story/black-history-reframed-1619-origin-story REMINDER: in case you didn't know, you can get a free subscription to the NYTimes. I think it is in CunyFirst or in the portal in the "Mall" section, where you can get items either for free or at a discount. WARNING
NEXT QUIZ All materials assigned are going to be
tested in future quizzes. I am tentatively planning a quiz for the week
of MARCH 9 (either Tue or Thu). |
