Significant features of Archaic art include:
- reliance on schemata (e.g., stance),
- impulse for pattern (e.g., draping of
garment, stylized hair),
- domination of surface and plane (rigidly
frontal, quadrilateral like the original block
of stone),
- linearity (lines isolate each part within
the form, principal features defined by sharp
ridges and shallow grooves),
- ornamentality (less here than elsewhere,
but notice detail on front of robe)
- explicitness and impassivity (e.g., the
archaic smile).
