COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is a reading course in ancient Greek for students who have passed the intermediate level. We shall read selections from Homer's Iliad. Although the focus of our work will be on reading the Greek, we shall consider issues of critical interpretation along the way.

TEXTS

Homeri Ilias (van Thiel, ed)

Cunliffe, A Lexicon of the Homeric Dialect

Recommended Reading: G Nagy, Best of the Achaeans

REQUIREMENTS AND EVALUATION

1) Attendance and Participation (25%)

2) Periodic translation quizzes (15%)

3) Three one-hour translation exams (45%)

4) Class presentation / 2 - 4 pg. written project (15%). Topics will be assigned the first day of class.

SCHEDULE

We shall start the semester reading approximately 100 - 150 lines a week and increase the pace with a goal of reading 4 - 500 lines a week. We will not necessarily cover in class all the lines assigned for each day. Thus, assignments for each class period will be made the class before until we come up to speed.
