SOE Curriculum item 99-01, Bulletin Change, Guidance and Counseling [DRAFT]

Cover letter and rationale

The Graduate Guidance and Counseling Program is proposing the attached Bulletin Change regarding curricular requirements for the Certificate of Advanced Studies degree.  The revision was first recomneded by Dr. Waters, concurred in by Dr. Giles and Dr. Holcomb-McCoy, who left it as "unfinished business" when she resigned as Program Head to pursue a position elsewhere.

The attached Bulletin Change will make equal the course work required for teh Certificate of Advanced Studies of students entering with an MS from Brooklyn Colege and the coursework required of students entering with an MS or MA from other institutions.

At the time the original sequence was designed, Brooklyn College's internship and field service requirement exceeded those in most institutions; as a result, Brooklyn College required  CAS students entering from other institutions to pursues two masters-level internships in addition to the cousework required of our own students who went on to pursue CAS degrees.  Since that time,  other institutions have substantially increased internship requirements in their own programs.  As written, the present requirements often force students to duplicate such internship requirements or force us to seek waivers from appropriate academic committees.  As written, the proposed requirements would eliminate the duplication.
