Literature and Folklore Syllabus: Reading List
Reading for this course include a packet of selections from longer works,
and
one or two additional volumes. The selections, which may change from time
to time, are drawn from important critical works about our topic, such as
Bruno Bettelheim's Uses of Enchantment and Jack Zipes' The
Trials and Tribulations of Little Red Riding Hood. Selected folk
tales and poetry are also included.
One of the additional texts is Peter and Iona Opie's Classical Fairy
Tales.
Among the longer works that have been included in the course are Zora Neale Hurston's Mules and Men and DuBose Heywood's Porgy. The longer works may vary from semester to semester.
Students can expect to read additional works not on the reading list to
complete their oral reports and their research papers.
