Literature and Folklore Syllabus: Course Description

Literature and Folklore explores the ways that literature engages our minds and touches our hearts.

Little Red Riding Hood

We will study basic narrative formulas and stylistic devices drawn from different times and cultures.

Particular attention will be paid to variants of familiar tales, including the Anansi tales, "Cinderella and " Little Red Riding Hood."

Among the writers and topics we will explore Carl Jung's concept of archetypes and symbols, and Bruno Bettleheim on "The Uses of Enchantment".

Most of the semester readings will be contained in a packet students are to purchase at Far Better Printer. An additional text will also be assigned.

Students can expect weekly reading assignments (50-75 pages). They will also write two personal (ungraded) papers,
one response paper, commenting on a journal article, give an oral presentation in which they explicate a text, and write a
seven to ten page research paper. A library visit is scheduled early in the semester to familiarize students with
library facilities and research methods.
