The link below will take you to the website for "Telling Our Stories/Sharing Our Lives." The site presents essays written by first-year Brooklyn College students who have participated in the First-Year Common Reading program and the English Department's Composition 1 course. Since 2004, essays from each year's first-year class have been collected for an annual anthology, and these essays are here preserved online.

Writing, language, and speech are central to Brooklyn’s general education philosophy. In order to graduate, all students must complete the following:
- English Composition 1 and 2
- Level three or higher in a foreign language
- Screening by the Speech Communication Arts and Sciences Department
