The Parts of a Lab Report

What we have suggested are six of the essential parts of a standard lab report that you might need for an introductory science class(5: 48-49). The comments that follow about each of these parts of your report are general in nature and are intended to help you to conceptualize your report. However, your specific science class might require you to follow a particular outline in writing your lab reports for that class. For example, your introduction and problem sections might be combined into a single section. In any case, it should be clear that specific class requirements take precedence over the outline suggested here. Nevertheless, it is hoped that you will find useful the general guidance given here about the essential parts of a lab report. The headings for the six parts of the lab report that we will use in this tutorial are as follows:

Introduction

Problem and Hypothesis/Objectives

Materials and Methods

Presentation and Interpretation of Data

Conclusions
