FOSSILS AND ANCIENT LIFE

Author: J. A. Chamberlain, Jr.

Edited for the web: Guillermo Rocha

Fossils are the remains of ancient organisms. Fossils are of unsurpassed importance because they constitute the primary physical evidence about the history of life. They reveal the existence of ancient species, such as dinosaurs and trilobites, and the timing of their origin and extinction. Fossils also indicate the course of evolution and the causes underlying it. Without fossils we would be totally unaware of the rich panorama of life as it has developed on the earth over nearly 4 billion years of time.
