The Rise and Fall of the Alliance for Progress

Juan Bosch. In September 1963, the overthrow of the reform-minded president of the Dominican Republic symbolized the collapse of the Alliance for Progress. Although the Alliance promised to promote democracy in Latin America, nine military coups occurred in the region during John Kennedy's presidency.
In today's class, we'll be finishing up with the Cuban Missile Crisis. But we'll also be examining the broader context of JFK's handling of Latin American affairs. The Alliance for Progress was a bold attempt to use economic and political assistance to achieve Latin American reform. In the end, the program failed to achieve its goals. The question for us: why did it fail?
