STAFFING

In 1997-1998 the staff included seventeen librarians, seven Higher Education Officers, two faculty on lines shared with other departments, 3 FTE adjuncts, 14 full-time supporting staff, 32 FTE College Assistants, and 43 Student Aides and Work Study students.

New Faculty

In the fall 1997 two new faculty members began working on lines shared between the Library and History (Adina Back) and the Library and Computer and Information Science (Lori Scarlatos). Both have offices in the Library and make their presence very much felt. Lori's contributions to the Academic Information Technologies program and the TIIAP project have been keys to their success. Adina's work on the new minor in Archival Studies and Community Documentation has been singular.

Recruiting

During 1997-1998 we recruited for three new lines: Archival Assistant, Web Development Specialist, and Life Sciences Specialist. The first two were filled with Marianne LaBatto (July) and Gilbert Midonnet (August). Despite wide advertising in print and electronic media, the pool for the science position was not a strong one; we elected to reopen the search and fill the slot in the coming academic year.

In March 1998 the Provost issued an invitation to propose new positions for the 1998-1999 academic year. Mindful that the new Library will require more staff in order to:

we proposed several positions and received permission to recruit for both a Social Science Librarian and an Information Literacy Specialist in the 1998-1999 academic year.

Filling Professional Vacancies

Alex Rudshteyn was hired (March) to fill the vacant Assistant to the Director of Library Systems and Academic Computing position.

Upgrading Positions

Nicholas Irons' position was upgraded to Assistant Higher Education Officer, and librarian Beth Evans received a salary adjustment. Beth was hired during a year when starting salaries were not especially strong; she and several faculty colleagues who began at the same time were given increases.
