The Caribbean Collection:
An Archival Survey of the Records of the
Jamaican and Trinidadian Communities of Brooklyn

Progress Report - April 2002

  • We conducted two Workshops for METRO this month.  The workshop entitled, "Documenting the Underdocumented," presents the project as a case study through which we offered instructions for conducting community documentation initiatives.  One presentation was at the offices of METRO and the other at a Public LIbrary in Westchester.

  •
  • The project coordinator was interviewed by Dr. Joyce Prestwidge and Advisory Committee Member Jim Dyer for Queens Public Access Television.  The tape is presently being edited and we will post the air times as soon as that information is available.

  •
  • The project was represented at the Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce and Industry's Awards Gala Dinner.  The Project Coordinator was able to both touch base with many established contacts and meet new community leaders whose experiences and insight will be a welcome addition to the project.

  •
  • Fortunately, we are beginning to see the results of our Media Campaign.  The project field/assistant has arranged for five papers to cover the project: Caribbean Life, Caribbean Voice, The Amsterdam News, The Afro Times, and The Daily Challenge.  An article on the project will also be featured in next month's issue of Everybody's magazine.

  •
  • We have began three surveys this month:  Mannings Past Student's Association, Giddy Hall Alumni Association, and the Wolmers Alumni Association.  Each of these organizations are affiliates of the Union of Jamaican Alumni Association.

  •
  • We continue to survey the papers of the Union of Jamaican Alumni Associations and the St. Peter Claver Roman Catholic Church.

  •
  • Project Staff met with Deputy Borough President of Brooklyn Yvonne Graham.   Ms. Graham offered her assistance and suggested some organizations to be contacted as possible survey organizations.

  •
  • Due to the growing quantity of project files, we have decided to invest in a filing cabinet.  The Project Field Assistant has worked to devise new filling system that is more conducive to the project as it is currently functioning.

  •
  • The project continues to contact and follow-up with the historically significant Jamaican Progressive League and Tobago Alumni Association.

  •
  • Academic research about the Jamaican, Trinidadian & Tobagonian, and Pan-Caribbean community continues so that the survey will accurately reflect the dynamics of the community.
