Jamaican and Trinidadian Communities of Brooklyn

Progress Report - July 2001


  • A library intern from the University of the West Indies (Mona) began a six-week internship at the Brooklyn College library; she will devote part of her time to working on this project.
  • Project staff contacted the Consulate General of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.  Met with Deputy Consul Gail P. Guy, who expressed support of the project and provided a list of contacts.  Introductory letters and project information were sent to these contacts.
  • Project staff contacted the Consulate General of Jamaica.  Met with Consul General Dr. Basil K. Bryan, who expressed his support of the project and will provide a list of contacts.
  • Outreach efforts to religious-based organizations began. After an inquiry from their archivist, project staff met with representatives of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn. Introductory letters and project information were sent to several Roman Catholic churches, Episcopal churches, and churches representing other religious denominations.
  • Direct outreach efforts to the media continued.  The first article publicizing the project appeared in the July 24, 2001 issue of Caribbean Life, a weekly newspaper distributed in the Caribbean communities of Brooklyn and Staten Island.  Articles in other newspapers are expected in the weeks ahead.
  • Mailings and outreach to different organizations continued.
  • Follow-up contacts and meetings with organization leaders continued.
  • The Project web site was updated.
