Policy on Academic Integrity

Academic dishonesty of any type, including cheating and plagiarism, is unacceptable at Brooklyn College. Cheating is any misrepresentation in academic work. Plagiarism is the representation of another person's work, words, or ideas as your own. Students should consult the Brooklyn College Student Handbook for a fuller, more specific discussion of related academic integrity standards. Faculty members are encouraged to discuss with students the application of these standards to work in each course. Academic dishonesty is punishable by failure of the "test, examination, term paper, or other assignment on which cheating occurred" (Faculty Council, May 18, 1954). In addition, disciplinary proceedings in cases of academic dishonesty may result in penalties of admonition, warning, censure, disciplinary probation, restitution, suspension, expulsion, complaint to civil authorities, or ejection.

Example: (although it's hard to believe you need suggestions)

Other common method: insert # & *% between first and last name

Add digits to your name:   joesmith123@email.com  joe.smith123@email.com

NEVER use sequences from your SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER.  In particular NEVER use the last four digits.

To facilitate access to the blog and other functions (private youtube etc) I recommend using GMAIL.

SCREEN NAME

When you create your account, make sure the screen name (the name that shows up in the receiver's inbox) is your FIRST and LAST NAME. No pseudonyms, or nicknames, please.

If you need to change your screen name on gmail, go to YOUTUBE. You will find dozens of tutorials.

In the past HOTMAIL blocked communications with Yahoo and Gmail (or viceversa.) If you choose HOTMAIL, your messages may not arrive to destination.

 For all communications, send a message to the course email account.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

• BLOG: this is the equivalent of class attendance and participation. I expect all to participate fully, exchange ideas and develop a line of thinking. I welcome open discussions and disagreements.  This class is both safe and free: safe to express and explore opinions and perspectives without fear of repercussions from anyone. I encourage you to try thinking outside your comfort zone and consider, for a moment, that you may be "wrong" in your positions. See what happens to your mind and let us know. Of course, civility is a must.
   
• TESTS AND QUIZZES: I will administer tests and quizzes with due notice. In order to pass you will have to engage in DEEP READING.  "Deep Reading" means reading SLOWLY, with attention and taking notes of the aspects that strike you as most relevant. It also involves writing down notes about your impressions, ideas, intuitions, insights. The technique also applies to screening visual materials.
  
  It will test your knowledge of the texts (reading and visual). This is to ensure that you are prepared to join the discussions and contribute with your opinions and ideas. There are no make-ups.
  
  
• REQUIRED READING: It is your responsibility to acquire the books required for the course.
  I DID NOT PLACE AN ORDER WITH THE BC BOOKSTORE (you can find better prices online.)

  You can use an ebook version, if you prefer. My personal preference is for hard copies where I can underline passages and scribble in notes and asterisks.

  WRITING ASSIGNMENTS:
  • Each assignment must be sent to the correct email address.
  • Each assignment must be on time.
  • Each assignment must have the correct file name.
  • Each assignment must be sent via email attached to a message with the correct subject.
    
    FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THESE FORMAL REQUIREMENTS WILL RESULT IN THE REJECTION OF THE ASSIGNMENT.
    
    NO EXCEPTIONS.  NO GRADES FOR LATE ASSIGNMENTS.
    
    
• DEADLINES: they are the equivalent of class attendance. Every deadline will be given with due advance notice.
   
• PORTFOLIO
   
  • All graded assignments and quizzes must be filed in a 3-ring binder. Pick one up for free in my office.
  • The portfolio is due the last week of class. It must be brought to my office or left in the Language Lab (Boylan 4316).
  • FAILURE TO TURN IN THE PORTFOLIO AT THE END OF THE COURSE WILL RESULT IN A FAILING GRADE (F).
  • Delays will incur a penalty in the final grade (one full letter grade per day).
