ASSIGNMENT FOR TODAY

What does it say about you?

I feel as though my note taking approach exposes something about me that I need to work on. Since I am focusing a lot of my notetaking on the mental struggle of Italian Americans immigrants, I think that I need to show more compassion for minority struggles in our communities today. Even though the physical struggles depicted in the book are completely different from the physical struggles others minorities face today. I still believe that many of the mental struggles faced by the main character, may be the same as immigrants that are traveling to our country today.

What does it say about you?

I noticed that I recorded the feelings that Pascal should have felt at certain times, as well as the hardships he went through. I noticed that I wrote about his grief, his pain, his anger. His happiness didn’t suffice, it seemed that his pain was more than enough to write about. I wrote these notes because it impacted me, it showed me the struggles of an immigrant just wanting to bring fortune to his family, however he fails repeatedly. I think taking these notes, shows that I focus more on the negative aspects of a main character, maybe it shows that I’m just a pessimistic.

After going over my notes I found that I record points in the plot that I think are important. This helps me to remember parts of the story and I have also recorded moments that have strong emotional ties to the characters. I also noticed that in this set of notes, and the previous ones, I record direct quotes from the book. The quotes I choose are ones that really stand out to me, either they have that emotional connection, or they are a key part of the plot. I would like to write down more questions as I take notes because I find that it clarifies what you’re reading and understanding more. I think it says that I pay attention to people’s emotions and how they are affected by things they go through in life.
