Observe the changing image that Octavian projects after 31 BCE: here he is togate and veiled, the embodiment of Roman dignitas (dignity, worthiness) and pietas (piety). As Zanker (1989:85) observes, his earlier focus on self-glorification gives way to a focus on religious devotion.
