Questions:

1. What does "nativism" mean?

2. List examples of nativism in US history.

3. What were the causes of nativist sentiments, according to Hing?

4. Why were the Chinese assumed to be a threat to the concept of the "melting pot," according to Hing?

5.  Give examples of the codification of anti-immigrant sentiment?

6.  What were some of the elements of the "Americanization" program directed at Mexican immigrants?  Whose traditions and cultural values were disseminated as part of these programs?

7.  List some relatively recent anti-immigrant policies and initiatives.

8.  Does what you read in this article support or undermine the notion of the U.S. as an open, "color-blind" society?  Why?
