English 2
| This class engages in three types of communication: class discussion; discussion
on-line in the caucus conference for this class; writing, saving and printing
files on paper. Work in all areas will be part of the required class
work and homework. The course is built on a process of going through
the stages of learning to do research and write; some exercises will be
graded and some will not be given a letter grade. The class will
often be conducted as a lab, with the teacher giving individual attention
to students at work.
It is expected that homework will be done on time, students will attend
class, and do required work in the library as well as on the Internet.
Students learn to develop an argument and cite sources appropriately by
paraphrase, summary and quotation; to build a bibliography; to review sources
critically; to put together the elements of a research paper according
to standard guidelines of documentation. Attention is paid to how
to think creatively, critically, and in a grounded fashion.
Some work will involve assigned readings and some will involve area of
student choice. Work to be revised is due within a week. The
assignments will be developed in response to the needs of the class and
the level of attainment of students in the class. If students need extra
work in basics they may obtain a referral to the Writing Center in the
Boylan Learning Center.
Students are expected to have completed English I or its equivalent successfully
(with a C or above) and will not receive credit for this class if they
have not fulfilled this prerequisite before registering for the course.
Students are not required to have computer skills before entering the class,
although it will be helpful. Students may assist each other with
technical questions concerning the computer, and may request assistance
from the instructor or the help desk staff as needed. Students are
expected to do their own written work, with originality, creativity, imagination
and intelligence. Enjoy!
