Proxy Accounts for Faculty
Off-Campus Access to
Electronic Resources Licensed by CUNY and Brooklyn College

What is Proxy?

Brooklyn College full-time and part-time faculty, and staff on the payroll with Microsoft Exchange E-Mail accounts, can now access electronic resources licensed by the CUNY Office of Library Services or Brooklyn College Library from their off-campus, Internet-accessible computers.

Currently these resources include the full-text journal databases such as Lexis-Nexis Universe and Infotrac Academic ASAP, the journals from the American Chemical Society, and the Academic Press (IDEAL) titles.

Click here to see a list of electronic research resources by title.

How it Works

The Brooklyn College will route your requests to see licensed resources through an Internet server called a proxy server that is located at Brooklyn College. NOTE: This is a new Brooklyn College proxy service. If you have previously set up a CUNY proxy account, we recommend you change over to this account, as it will allow you to access additional resources paid for by the Brooklyn College Library. Click here if you would prefer to dial into the Brooklyn College server.

Get a proxy account

To have your requests to see licensed resources routed through the Brooklyn College proxy server, you will need a proxy account. To set up this account, you will need to have a Brooklyn College Microsoft Exchange E-Mail account, available for all faculty and staff.
New users are required to complete an E-mail LAN Account Application.

  • You may download the e-mail application form at: http://techweb.brooklyn.cuny.edu/its/text/home/pubs.htm. [Please note, this form is stored as an Adobe Acrobat Portable Document File (PDF). To view or print these files, you will need to download and install the free Acrobat Reader, available at: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html.]
  • Applications are also available from ITS (0607 Plaza) or the Faculty Training and Development Lab (301 Roosevelt Hall).

Please allow two weeks for creation of your new e-mail account.

Browsing the Web When Your Browser is Configured for a Proxy Server

Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator handle your Web searching differently once you have configured your browser to recognize a proxy server. Both will present a proxy identification box at some point in your Web browsing. Reminder: your proxy identification information is your username and password from your Brooklyn College Microsoft Exchange Email account.

A proxy identification box requires that you:
type in your Microsoft Exchange E-Mail user name (exactly as it appears)
hit tab key to move to the next entry box for your password
type in your Microsoft Exchange E-Mail password (CASE SENSITIVE)

You will then be able to access the resources that CUNY licenses on the Web and any other free Web sites.

    Netscape Navigator

Netscape will ask for identification information when you request a URL for a licensed resource. Be sure to type in your user name (with appropriate capitalization) with BCNET\ in front of it: BCNET\MyUserName. You will not be asked for this information again, as long as you do not exit the browser.

    Microsoft Internet Explorer

Explorer will ask for identification as soon as you turn on your browser. You will not be asked for this information again, as long as you do not exit the browser.

    Helpful Tips

    Brooklyn College Students:

    - Currently Brooklyn College students are not eligible for proxy accounts. Students will be eligible for accounts in the future.

    America Online (AOL) Customers:

    - The AOL browser cannot be configured to work with the Brooklyn College proxy server. If you access the Internet through AOL, you can download the Netscape Navigator browser at http://www.netscape.com/ and run this alternate browser on your computer when you want to visit the licensed resources. See above for how to configure the Netscape browser to work with the proxy server.

    Speeding your searching:

    - Accessing the Web through a proxy server may slow down your searching. If you find searching the Internet for freely-accessible sites is particularly slow, see if removing the configuration through the proxy server when you are visiting sites other than the licensed sites improves your search time.

    Other limited-access Web sites:

    - Many Web sites you visit require user identification and bring up the identifying box you saw when configuring your browser. The user identification and password from Brooklyn College will only work for accessing the licensed resources that CUNY and Brooklyn College offer. It will not allow you to access products that other colleges or organizations license individually.
