Trouble-shooting Proxy Problems
There are three categories of problems with proxy.
- 1) Set Up Problems
- If you are having trouble setting up the proxy or aren't getting an ID/Password box then you should contact the ITS Networkgroup at NetGroup@brooklyn.cuny.edu or (718) 951-5861. You may also contact a Reference Librarian at RefDesk@brooklyn.cuny.edu or (718) 951-5628.
- Generally problems with proxy setup won't produce 'error' messages - it simply won't work.
- Sometimes licensed resources will present users with their own password boxes if they don't
detect a proper ISP. Brooklyn College ID/passwords will not work in these! If the ID/Password box you see doesn't have the proxy address in it (either remote.brooklyn.cuny.edu or proxy2.brooklyn.cuny.edu) then you have not successfully made contact with the proxy server. A Brooklyn College Proxy Server sample ID/Password box is reproduced at right. Note that the proxy address is in the text.
- 2) America Online(AOL)
- The AOL browser cannot be configured to work with the Brooklyn College proxy server.
If you access the Internet through AOL, there are two ways to access BC licensed
resources:
1. We recommend downloading the Netscape Navigator browser at http://www.netscape.com/ and running this this alternate browser on your computer when you
want to visit the licensed resources. See above for how to configure
the Netscape browser to work with the proxy server.
2. Access selected resources through a system called
Remote
Patron Authentication (RPA).
- 3) Server-Based Problems
- If you are getting error messages such as
"HTTP/1.0 500 Server Error (The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed.)"
when trying to access anything with the proxy turned on, the ITS Networkgroup should be contacted immediately because THEY MAY BE UNAWARE OF THE PROBLEM.
NetGroup@brooklyn.cuny.edu or (718) 951-5861. If you let the library know as well, we can also follow up with ITS. RefDesk@brooklyn.cuny.edu or (718) 951-5628.
Remember, when is the proxy server is down, RPA access, which is explained at http://academic.brooklyn.cuny.edu/library/electronic_resources/rpa.htm, can be a good alternative for limited resources.
