Two Ways to Get Electronic Resources
from Off-Campus
Student Instructions

1. Proxy -- All Resources Link to Instructions
2. RPA -- Selected Resources Only Link to Instructions

1. Proxy – for All Resources

Get your E-mail Information
To use proxy, you need your Brooklyn College Student E-mail User Name(ID). The College sent you this information in the US mail, or you can access it online at: http://infocenter.brooklyn.cuny.edu/webmail/

If you don't already have your E-mail User Name(ID), you can get it online from the E-mail Information Center, shown below.

To find out your E-mail User Name(ID) in this system, enter:

  • Your Student ID: this is usually your social security number.

  • Your PIN: this is the 6-digit PIN you use for registration, usually your birthdate (eg. 092780).

  • Click
E-mail Info Center

The system will then display your E-mail Account Information, as shown below.

  • The E-mail User Name(ID) in this example is bcacad\gms0914.

  • If you have trouble, contact staff at the Atrium student lab at 1306 Plaza: Call 718-677-6180 (9am-6pm) or send E-mail to feedback@brooklyn.cuny.edu.

Browsing with the Proxy Turned On

  • When the Proxy asks for your User Name it is asking for your BC Email User Name(ID) (in this example bcacad\gms0914).
  • Your proxy Password is your Student ID (social security) number.

How to Configure your Web browser for Proxy
You will need to configure (set up) your Web browser software to recognize your proxy account.
Link to the Instructions.

  • Netscape Navigator
  • Internet Explorer 5
  • Internet Explorer 4

America Online (AOL) Customers:The AOL browser cannot be configured to work with the Brooklyn College proxy server. If you access the Internet through AOL, there are two ways to access BC licensed resources:
    1. We recommend downloading the Netscape Navigator browser at http://www.netscape.com/ and running this this alternate browser on your computer when you want to visit the licensed resources. See above for how to configure the Netscape browser to work with the proxy server.
    2. Access selected resources through a system called Remote Patron Authentication (RPA).

    2. RPA -- for Selected Resources Only

Remote Patron Authentication (RPA) allows you to get to a selected number of resources, through your Brooklyn College ID card Barcode.

Pros and Cons of the RPA System
RPA is a system that is more portable and easier to use than proxy. However, RPA has the disadvantage of providing access to fewer resources. RPA is a good choice for AOL members because they cannot configure their AOL browser for the proxy. (Note: if AOL users install and run Netscape or Internet Explorer, then proxy may work for them -- see America Online (AOL) Customers above).

See an updated list of available RPA resources below. More resources are added to this list as they become available for RPA, so check back from time to time.

For help choosing the appropriate resource for your research, come by the Field Library Reference desk or send an email to refdesk@brooklyn.cuny.edu

How to Get an RPA Account
Once you have registered at the Field Library's Circulation desk to check out books, you can use your library barcode to get to RPA resources from off-campus. If you have trouble, talk to staff at the Circulation desk.

How to Get to Library Resources via RPA
    • Link to Library Resources from this page (below) or the RPA page.
    • When you link to the RPA resources from the RPA page, the system will ask for your Brooklyn Barcode, as shown at right.
    • Type your BC ID card barcode number into the box provided to gain access to the resource.
    • Reminder: you must register your ID barcode at the Field Library Circulation desk for RPA access to work.
