INTRODUCTION

Conjugations

Italian verbs are grouped in THREE different conjugations:

  • First conjugation: verbs whose infinitive form ends in -ARE

  • Second conjugation: verbs whose infinite form ends in -ERE

  • Third conjugation: verbs whose infinitive form ends in - IRE

Essere - Avere

"ESSERE" [To Be] and "AVERE" [To Have] have the additional function of AUXILIARY VERBS, that is, they are used to form compound tenses. ESSERE is also used in passive constructions.

Irregular Verbs

Several verbs -- the so called "IRREGULAR VERBS" do not follow the patterns of the standard conjugations. Their forms must be memorized individually.
