As a Syrian, who speaks Arabic I really do not enjoy the language. When people speak Arabic I feel as if they are angry. The language requires a lot of throat pronunciation, which sounds very vulgar to me.
4. Yes, I really dislike Syria's dialect of Arabic. I do love the Lebanese dialect of Arabic, I think they are more soft spoken.

The song "Here comes the sun" by the Beatles is very meaningful to me. This song is simply a breath of fresh air. It serves to me as a reminder that there will always be sunshine after periods of rain. Also, the accompaniment of the strings seems to be telling a story-line of someone finally accomplishing a long overdue goal.

There are multiple poems that I had to learn and memorize for school but unfortunately I can't remember all of them. The first poems that I had to memorize as a kid were 4 poems about each season. These poems have a deeper meaning to me because I connect them to the memories I had with my family at the time.

My favorite poem and song is the itsy bitsy spider. This is because it teaches a valuable lesson. The deeper meaning for me is to keep on trying and climbing even if you are knocked back down over and over again.

An annoying language or tongue I cannot say. I have one in mind but I care not to offend anyone, because it truly bugs me.

I am Puerto Rican and I dislike spanglish. When hear it, I immediately think that the person is uneducated and please forgive me when I say "ghetto".

As someone who speaks a dialect of Italian I can easily say I am proud to know it. It is another language in it of itself. It is completely different from the formal Italian that is taught in schools and it can only be learned by the people in towns themselves. It is sad to see that dialects are becoming more scarce as other languages are becoming more prominent in Europe. Although, the youth at least in the town where I stay in Italy, are re-learning the dialect so it does not die out. I would love to keep it alive because it is a big part of our heritage and culture.

A language that irritates me is Italian. The reason why it irritates me is because it sounds so similar to Spanish. It always throws me off, because I can understand it and then suddenly I won't understand some words and I find myself getting annoyed because I am a fluent Spanish speaker so I am familiar with most words. Afterwards, I realize they are speaking Italian and not Spanish.
4.Each Latin-American country has there own form of Spanish. The Spanish that irritates me the most is the Spaniard Spanish. The Spanish they use contains words that other Spanish speaking people don't use, such as vosotros. Everyone else says nosotros, their Spanish dialect just sounds weird to me even though both words mean the same.

If I had to say one language in particular, it would probably be German. Something about that language just sounds very angry.

My family speaks English with a Bajan accent but since I grew up around it for so long I don't really hear it. I do have Jamaican family that speaks Jamaican Patios which I don't speak so that gets annoying.

ASSIGNMENTS

My first reaction to the possibility that the universe is indeed governed by universal mathematical constants was amazement and curiosity. The idea that the universe is like a giant clock truly amazes me, because it is hard to understand if time actually exists in some way or if it is completely made up. I believe that both these points are true because I do believe that the universe has many aspects of time that are not made up. The sun rises and sets every day and the days get shorter in the winter time. I believe that there are concepts within the universe that are timed throughout the year but many that are also made up. There is no way that we can tell time based on a gigantic clock because each area of the world has a different time based on its position, but the initial time to base every other time off of was made up at some specific time in history. For example, when did we start keeping track of time? Where did we start counting? Which time frame around the world was the initial time that we base everything else off of? We have no definite answer to these questions and humans will not be able to find out the fundamental truths and explain everything. There will always be some “secrets” that we will never have access to. There are some questions that might be able to be solved in terms of historical records that may state when humans started discussing the concept of time. What time period does the discussion of time occur? Were these records constant across the world or not? How were certain mathematical constants used to count? To what degree can the mathematical constants actually give accurate information or tell us valuable information? There are many questions about these specific constants as well as time, that I believe do have some reliability and truth behind it, but a lot of this information we will never have access to.

Guido Sarducci brings up many important points when discussing the five minute university. He starts off by explaining how it doesn’t matter where you go to school and at the end of the day all it is is memorization for a test. He says that his five minute university is the answer so that you do not need to waste time in school considering that in five minutes you remember exactly what a college graduate knows five years after school. I agree with many points that he makes but also disagree in some aspects. I do believe that even though getting a degree takes a while and many people barely remember information they learned years after, it is an essential experience to have. My reasoning for this is because even though a lot of information is lost, especially having to do with topics that a person may not find interesting, you learn how to manage time and take responsibility. The time spent to apply yourself to memorize is an important aspect to have and in the end will get you farther than someone who cannot apply themselves to memorize and pass the exam. It is clear that in the outside world, overall knowledge is more useful but I believe that college also tests your other abilities and does not just simply teach you knowledge. In another way, I understand where Guido Sarducci is coming from and can understand how he feels like spending so much time in college and not gaining sufficient knowledge is a waste of time. This is where strengths in different areas come in. Some people can be book smart and capable of memorizing, but are dumb in the real world and others can have a hard time memorizing but be extremely smart when it comes to the world in general. College at the end of the day doesn’t define a persons intelligence.

Cecco Angiolieri
Tre cose solamente
Only Three Things

Tre cose solamente mi so 'n grado,
le quali posso non ben men fornire:
ciò è la donna, la taverna e 'l dado;
queste mi fanno 'l cuor lieto sentire.
Ma sì me le conven usar di rado,
ché la mie borsa mi mett'al mentire;

LITERAL TRANSLATION:

To me only three things are of interest,
which [moreover] I cannot well provide myself:
that is to say a woman, a tavern, and a dicegame;
these make my heart feel happy.
But it rarely works out for me to enjoy them
because my empty wallet lets me down!
When I remember this, everything is ashes,
since I lose my desire by [lack of] money.

And I say: —"Screw him!"— that is to say, my father.
Because he keeps me so lean
that I could travel effortlessly from France to here.
Extracting a denarius [coin] from his hand would be harder,
even at Eastertime when everybody is most giving,
than making a sparrowhawk catch a crane.

INTERPRETATIVE

Only three things interest me at all: —
a bar, a dicegame, and a wench to ball.
These three alone would give my heart delight,
if I could satisfy my appetite.
But rarely have I pleasure of the town
(and when I think of this, life turns to ash)
because my empty wallet lets me down
and frustrates my desire by lack of cash.

And so I say: —"Screw him!"— that is, my sire,
because he keeps me on such meager fare
that I've grown light enough to send by mail.
It is less possible to get a dime,
from that tight fist, at jolly Eastertime,
than in a dixie cup to catch a whale.

The Canticle of the Sun  LINK

by Francis of Assisi

Read also the Italian version below. Underline the words you recognize.

Most high, all powerful, all good Lord! All praise is yours, all glory, all honor, and all blessing. To you, alone, Most High, do they belong. No mortal lips are worthy to pronounce your name.

Be praised, my Lord, through all your creatures, especially through my lord Brother Sun, who brings the day; and you give light through him. And he is beautiful and radiant in all his splendor! Of you, Most High, he bears the likeness.

Be praised, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars; in the heavens you have made them, precious and beautiful.

Be praised, my Lord, through Brothers Wind and Air, and clouds and storms, and all the weather, through which you give your creatures sustenance.

Be praised, My Lord, through Sister Water; she is very useful, and humble, and precious, and pure.

Be praised, my Lord, through Brother Fire, through whom you brighten the night. He is beautiful and cheerful, and powerful and strong.

Be praised, my Lord, through our sister Mother Earth, who feeds us and rules us, and produces various fruits with colored flowers and herbs.

Be praised, my Lord, through those who forgive for love of you; through those who endure sickness and trial. Happy those who endure in peace, for by you, Most High, they will be crowned.

Be praised, my Lord, through our Sister Bodily Death, from whose embrace no living person can escape. Woe to those who die in mortal sin! Happy those she finds doing your most holy will. The second death can do no harm to them.

Praise and bless my Lord, and give thanks, and serve him with great humility.

QUICK RESEARCH:

Who was S. Francis? When did he live? What did he do to earn his keeping? Does he have an interesting story? Is he an interesting saint or just a run-of-the-mill good guy?

Further intellectual curiosity: S. Francis was portrayed by Giotto in a cycle of frescos in the basilica in Assisi (we will run into Giotto again in the film Decameron, based on Boccaccio's short stories.)

Oh, by the way, who is Giotto and why is he so important? (But, is he really important.?)

JACOPONE DA TODI

O Signor, per cortesia,
manname la malsanìa!

A mme la freve quartana,
la contina e la terzana,
la doppla cotidïana
co la granne ydropesia.

A mme venga mal de dente,
mal de capo e mal de ventre;
a lo stomaco dolur’ pognenti
e ’n canna la squinanzia.

Mal dell’occhi e doglia de flanco
e la postema al canto manco;
tiseco me ionga enn alto
e d’onne tempo fernosìa.

Aia ’l fecato rescaldato,
la melza grossa e ’l ventr’enflato
e llo polmone sia ’mplagato
cun gran tòssa e parlasia.

A mme venga le fistelle
con migliaia de carvuncilli,
e li granci se sian quelli
che tutto replen ne sia.

A mme venga la podraga
(mal de cóglia sì me agrava),
la bisinteria sia plaga
e le morroite a mme sse dìa.

A mme venga ’l mal de l’asmo,
iongasecce quel del pasmo;
como a can me venga el rasmo,
entro ’n vocca la grancia.

A mme lo morbo caduco
de cadere enn acqua e ’n foco
e ià mai non trovi loco,
che eo afflitto non ce sia.

A mme venga cechetate,
mutezza e sordetate,
la miseria e povertate
e d’onne tempo entrapparìa.

Tanto sia ’l fetor fetente
che non sia null’om vivente,
che non fuga da me dolente,
posto en tanta enfermaria.

En terrebele fossato,
che Riguerci è nomenato,
loco sia abandonato
da onne bona compagnia.

Gelo, grando e tempestate,
fulgure, troni e oscuritate;
e non sia nulla aversitate,
che me non aia en sua bailìa.

Le demonia enfernali
sì mme sian dati a menestrali,
che m’essèrcino en li mali,
ch’e’ ho guadagnati a mea follia.

Enfin del mondo a la finita
sì mme duri questa vita
e poi, a la scivirita,
dura morte me sse dìa.

Allegom’en sseppultura
un ventr’i lupo en voratura
e l’arliquie en cacatura
en espineta e rogarìa.

Li miracul’ po’ la morte,
chi cce vene aia le scorte
e le deversazioni forte
con terrebel fantasia.

Onn’om che m’ode mentovare
sì sse deia stupefare
e co la croce sé segnare,
che reo escuntro no i sia en via.

Signor meo, non n’è vendetta
tutta la pena ch’e’ aio ditta,
ché me creasti en tua diletta
et eo t’ho morto a villania.
