Common problems

1. No ftp account yet or ftp account doesn't work
2. Need computer equipment
3. Not networked
4. Need software
5. You've done all this work and then you find your students don't even have email accounts
6. Your students don't know how to surf the web

1. No ftp account yet or ftp account doesn't work:

FTP: file transfer protocol, the software you use to move files from your computer to one of the campus servers.

Instructions for using the FTP_WS software are available on this page.

If you haven't filled out a FTP account application form, be sure to get one: The form is available in 019 of the Library, in 0607 Plaza,  or online in Adobe  format (you'll need an Adobe Acrobat reader to be able to print it out) in the appendix of the Faculty Computing Guide here.   Send it to ITS at 0607 Plaza.

If you're having troubles with ftp-ing, contact the Web Support Group at ITS, netgroup@brooklyn.cuny.edu. They will try to resolve FTP issues, including new FTP accounts, or problems accessing current FTP accounts. Faculty may e-mail the support staff directly at netgroup@brooklyn.cuny.edu , or call the web support
dispatch line at 718-677-6180, Mon-Fri 9-5 (which has voice mail).

2.  Need computer equipment:

Let Naomi Bushman, at nbushman@cuny.campus.mci.net, know the specifications of the computer equipment you have now, what operating system you're using.

3. Not networked:

First, find out if your computer has a network card installed. If you don't have a network card, you will need some new equipment.

Second, find out if there is a network cable in your office that is not being used.

Third, contact the WebCore Coordinator, Naomi Bushman, to let her know what you need done.

4.  Need software

Find out from Nick Irons at niron@brooklyn.cuny.edu if Brooklyn College has the site license, or limited site license, for the software. Chapter Ten of the Faculty Guide to Computing has a list of site-licensed software. It's at this page.

5.  You've done all this work and then you find your students don't even have email accounts

Every student registered for even one course in a degree program has an email account they can use.  They can access their email account for the first time through the internet -- they'll need to know their Student ID# (SSN) and the PIN number issued by the registrar. For complete directions, click here.

If faculty need an email account, fill out an application at the Reception Desk in 0607 Plaza or at the Faculty Lab - 019 Library, and return it to 0607 Plaza. An application is also available online in Adobe format in ITS Publications.

6.  Your students don't know how to surf the web

The library also offers drop-in workshops daily through the first half of each semester, coordinated by Barbara Scheele.

Also, the two Multimedia Classrooms located in the Library are now available for you to reserve for your classes. Please be sure to meet with Nick, niron@brooklyn.cuny.edu, the manager of the faculty computer lab, well before your inaugural class meeting, to address your special hardware and/or software needs for the classes you plan to conduct in these rooms.   More information about these rooms is available here.  Instructions for reserving these rooms are available on the web here.
