How Do I Print Using the New System?

Currently registered BC Students use their existing accounts. At the beginning of every semester, the list of currently enrolled students (part and full-time, undergraduate and graduate) is loaded into the printing system and assigns each student a printing quota for the semester. Initially your Account Number is your SS # and your SIMS PIN is your 6-digit date of birth. You can change your PIN for your print system account at any Patron Kiosk (changing your print account PIN does not change your SIMS PIN and vice versa). Full-time BC Faculty: go to a Patron Kiosk to activate your existing account by adding money. Use your Social Security number as your ID and our birthday mm/dd/yy as a password to log in. All other users must create and activate an account by adding money at a Patron Kiosk before printing.

TOP

How Do I Create an Account?

Go to the Patron Kiosk. Press Create Account. At the next screen fill in the mandatory fields. The Account Number must be 4-10 digits (numbers) and should be a number you can easily remember like your telephone number. PIN must be 4-6 digits. Your Email Address is not mandatory but we cannot retrieve your account information without it.
At the next screen you will be prompted to add money to the account. You must add at least $1. No refunds can be issued for any unused balance. Paid balances do not expire. The machine accepts $1, $5, $10, and $20 dollar bills. It does not give change, insert only the amount of money you wish to add to the account. Press DONE. You can now print a receipt (highly recommended).

How Do I Check My Account Balance?

At a Patron Kiosk press MANAGE ACCOUNT. At the next screen, sign in. You will see your Free Balance (current BC students only) and your Paid Account Balance. Use the Add Funds button if your balance is low.

TOP

How Much Free Printing Do I Get? (currently enrolled BC students only)

Your exact number of free printouts depends on your collegial status. For example, most full-time undergraduate students receive 300 free B&W printouts per semester. Graduate students receive 200 printouts per class with a maximum of 600 B&W printouts per semester. At the end of the semester all free balances (unused free printouts) expire and are reset for the next semester. There is no roll-over or stock-piling of unused free printouts.

How Do I Print?

Before you send anything to a printer we recommend using the PRINT PREVIEW function on the computer (under FILE on the top tool bar) to view the document. You can avoid printing unwanted or blank pages by selecting only the pages you want to print to send to the printer

After previewing the print job, select PRINT from the File menu.

All of the Library Labs, except the Reserve Room, have B&W and Color printers. You will be prompted to choose B&W or Color. If you choose B&W you may select either an Over The Counter OTC located at the nearest Service Desk or a Self Service printer. All Color printing is done at an OTC printer. If you choose an OTC printer your account will be charged immediately.

The Service Desk will hold printouts until the end of the business day. Reminder: unclaimed printouts are charged to your account. If you choose a Self Service printer you can continue to add items to your personal print queue and review all items before releasing those jobs you decide you want after completing your research. You will be charged only for jobs released to the printer at the Self Service Pickup Station. Jobs sent to the Self Service printer from work stations in the Library Labs or the Library Café can be printed at any Self Service Pickup Station in those facilities. Jobs remain in the Print Queue for 24 hours. Printing in the Library Café after 11:45 p.m. must be sent to the Self Service printer. In the Reserve Room all jobs go to the OTC (Service Desk) printer.

TOP

Where Are the Printers?

There are Self Service, OTC (Service Desk) and Color printers available in the New Media Center, L4 (lower level of the Library), Circulation, and the Library Café. Only B&W printing is available in the Reserve Room.

OTC and Color printers are at the Service Desks.

Self Service Pickup Station Locations:

  • New Media Center: Printers are located next to the photocopier at the front of the book stacks.
  • L4 (lower level of the Library): Printers are located to the right of the Service Desk, just past the L4 Computer Sign In area.
  • Circulation: Printers are at the end of the counter nearest the Lobby.
  • Library Café: At the Service Counter.

Getting Your Printout

Go to a Self Service Pickup Station. If you are in the Library or Library Café you can use any available Self Service Pickup Station.

Chose the ones you wish to print at this time by checking the box to the left of the Document Name. The total cost and number of pages will be displayed at the bottom of the screen.

Unselected jobs remain in the queue for 24 hours unless deleted by the patron. Reminder: Jobs sent to the printer are deleted immediately after being printed.

On the next screen enter you Account Number and PIN again to authorize the charges for printing. The total cost of printing your jobs will also be displayed on this page.
Once the charges are authorized your account will be charged.
Re-credit for printing is only possible in cases of printer malfunctions.
Go to the nearest printer to pick up your job. Reminder: Please check to make sure that you take your print jobs and not anyone else’s.

We cannot refund account balances, however, paid accounts do not expire so you will be able to use your balance on your next visit.

TOP

There’s Something Wrong With My Printout. Can I Get a Refund?

If the problem with your printout is due to a printer malfunction (i.e., cut off pages, poor quality printing) fill out a Credit Request slip at the nearest Service Desk and attach the printout you want to have credited. No credit can be issued without the printout. We are not responsible for user printing errors such as multiple copies, unwanted pages, or blank PDF files.

TOP

Why Is Color Printing 50 cents?

Color printing is simply more expensive and we have to charge accordingly. This is a standard fee comparable if not cheaper than most copy shops. Color printing requires a paid balance in your account: It is not included in BC Student’s Free Printing. At the Print command select Color. Color print jobs are directed to the nearest Service Desk. You will be charged fifty cents ($0.50) for each page sent to the Color printer. Please make sure that you select B&W for your remaining print jobs.
