Now It's Just a Click away:
Bring the Electronic Library Home with You!
The Library is very pleased to offer faculty, staff and registered students off-campus access to many of its licensed electronic resources through proxy access.  For a list of licensed resources click here.

How does it work?  Once your browser has been set up,  your requests are routed through an Internet server called a proxy which is located on campus. In this way, your computer looks as if it's connecting to the Web from the BC campus.

What Will I Need to Get a Proxy Account?

Faculty and Staff:  Please note: this is a new Brooklyn College proxy service. If you already have a CUNY proxy account, we recommend you change over to to the Brooklyn proxy for access to additional resources paid for by the Library.

Your Microsoft Exchange e-mail username/ID and password are your username/ID and password for proxy. If you do not have a Microsoft Exchange e-mail account you will need to submit an e-mail account application.  You can download the e-mail application form here. Applications are also available from ITS (0607 Plaza) or the AIT Faculty Training and Development Lab (301 Roosevelt Hall).

Registered Students: Your BC student e-mail username/ID and password are your  username/ID and password for proxy. Your e-mail account information was sent to you in the US mail. You can also access it online here. If you have trouble, contact the Atrium Student Lab at 1306 Plaza: 718-677-6180 (9am-6pm) or send e-mail to:  feedback@brooklyn.cuny.edu

How Do I Set Up My Web Browser for Proxy?

You will need to set up your Web browser to recognize your proxy account. Below are faculty and staff instructions for setting up the Microsoft Internet Explorer (works best!), Netscape or AOL :

Netscape Communicator 4.0 or higher  || AOL USERS
Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0  || Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0

Students should go to for HERE for set up instructions--which include a multimedia version to assist in the set up process.

Many users experience difficulty using the Proxy server with AOL, Internet Explorer is strongly suggested. Also when  you have finished using BC Library resources, logging out of the Proxy will expedite your other web surfing.

Logging On To Proxy

Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator handle your Web searching differently once you have set your browser up to recognize the proxy. Both browsers will present a proxy identification box at some point in your Web browsing. Remember: your proxy identification information is your username/ID and password from your e-mail account.

A proxy identification box requires that you:

         - type in your BC e-mail user name (exactly as it appears)
Note: Netscape requires you to add  BCNET\ before your username: BCNET\MyUserName

         - hit tab key to move to the next entry box for your password

         - type in your BC e-mail password (CASE SENSITIVE)
You will not have to do this again during a session unless you close the browser.

You will then be able to access the resources that the BC Library licenses on the Web and any other free Web sites. For faster access to free sites, exit the proxy server.
