PERIODICALS
- The Library subscribes to both scholarly journals and popular magazines.
The chief criteria for selection is relevance to the Brooklyn College
curriculum or to faculty research. The Library currently subscribes to approximately 4200
titles with some holdings dating back to the nineteenth century.
- The Library keeps periodicals in three different formats-each in a different
location.
- Current issues are kept in the LaGuardia Reading Room,
shelved alphabetically by title. The time span for "current" varies from title
to title but it is generally the last two years.
- Bound journals are in the second floor stack area, shelved by call
number. The call number arrangement brings all periodicals on the same
subject together the same way call numbers for books do.
- Microfilm journals and newspapers are in an area outside the stairwell on
the second floor shelved alphabetically by title.
- If you need a journal, you must first search CUNY+.
- To find out if Brooklyn College has the journal, volume, and issue you want.
- To find out where the journal is located and in what format it is
held.
Finding a Periodical Using CUNY+
1. After you have the citation (author, article title, name and date of the journal), go to the
CUNY+ terminals.
2. Type cho dpac on the command line and hit the
enter key, or, if the menu is already on the screen, just type dpac.
3. Type T=name of the journal and hit the enter key.
Example:

4. You will get a list of holdings with this title.
Pick the one marked SERIAL if there is more than one.

Hint:

publication after the title.

list with the title on top and other similar titles beneath it will come up.
Type 1 and hit the enter key. On the next screen the periodicals are listed
first.
At the next screen if more than one CUNY location (library) receives
the journal, pick the one that has (BC) at the end of the line. Type the line #
and hit the enter key.
Example: EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN
- <NEW YORK> SERIAL (BB)
- <NEW YORK> SERIAL (BC)
- <NEW YORK>

TYPE 2 AND HIT SEND.
